GMO—OMG!

Four years ago, a Trader Joe’s healthy grocery store opened up in my town. The line of shoppers literally wrapped around the building. A man in front of me at the cash register asked the lady, “I don’t get it. What’s all the excitement about?” She replied, “Well, for starters, we don’t sell GMOs here.” He looked at her very puzzled and said, “Why on Earth would anyone purchase a car from a grocery store?” For anyone perhaps still living under a rock, a GMO is not a car. It’s a genetically modified organism (GMO), which has been altered in a lab through genetic modification, whether by high-tech modern genetic engineering, or long-time traditional plant-breeding methods.

This genetic altering technology uses DNA molecules from different sources, which are combined into one molecule to create a new set of genes. Molecular engineers working in laboratories are gene-splicing vegetable seedlings with poisonous pesticides and herbicides so the plants are inherently protected from the worms and insects that damage them. Who is the company playing God and creating these Frankenstein seeds? None other than Monsanto, the biotech giant and creator of the most popular herbicide/pesticide in the world: Roundup. In fact these gene-spliced seeds produce what is referred to as “Roundup Ready” crops.

The dangers of eating pesticides and herbicides are well documented. The primary poison in these products is a toxin called glyphosate. This chemical was first introduced as a weed killer in 1974, prior to the introduction of genetically modified crops. This chemical is strikingly similar to dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, better known as DDT, another poisonous pesticide Monsanto manufactured in the 1940s. DDT was banned in 1972 after it was linked to serious health hazards to humans and several environmental issues. Glyphosate and DDT are very difficult compounds to degrade, and both promote the proliferation of disease-causing pathogens; however, many experts consider glyphosate to be an even greater health risk than DDT.⁴⁸⁶ Dr. Don Huber, a professor at Purdue University, is considered one of the leading experts on the toxicity of genetically engineered (GE) foods. He’s taught plant pathology and soil microbiology for more than thirty-five years. When asked which toxin he would prefer to use if he had to make a choice between two evils, DDT or glyphosate, Dr. Huber said he’d take DDT any day.⁴⁸⁷

Statistics from the California Environmental Protection Agency’s Pesticide Illness Surveillance Program shows that glyphosate-related health incidents are reported with more frequency than incidents related to any other pesticides.⁴⁸⁸ Glyphosate herbicides damage DNA in human cells, causing birth defects, endocrine diseases, and cancer. Scientists hired by Monsanto have been accused of deliberately trying to conceal the dangers of glyphosate by falsifying tests.⁴⁸⁹ In 1983 the EPA found “routine falsification of data” when investigating Industrial Biotest Laboratories.⁴⁹⁰ ⁴⁹¹ In 1991 Craven laboratories also conducted studies for Monsanto. The owner and three employees of this lab falsified lab results and were indicted on twenty felony counts. The owner was sentenced to five years in prison and fined $50,000; the lab was fined $15.
